Shipping coffee in the traditional Hessian Coffee Sack is the most common way to transport coffee around the world. Coffee makes the long voyage from grower to roaster after being dry milled and packed into hessian sacks and put onto containers. This hard-wearing material is ideal for shipping green coffee which normally arrives at the roastery in 60-70kg coffee sacks. Most speciality grade coffee now comes with a grain pro lining with the outer shell of the coffee sack constructed from jute, hessian (usually African coffee sacks) or part synthetic material (American coffee sacks). Shop regulars tell us they come in very handy for a home made shopper bag, potato growing project or the odd sack race!
Coffee Sack Sizing
A regular coffee sack will usually measure around 100cm x 70cm but we also sometimes receive smaller 50kg sacks. Our Brazilian Sacks come with an Atkinsons logo, others with logos from origin and some plain.
There are also slight variations in the colour and weave. If you have any preferences, let us know in the comments box at checkout, if not just go for a lucky dip! African sacks tend to be thicker and softer with a darker colour and American sacks are slightly stiffer in a lighter colour. Colombian sacks are extra coarse with a wide weave and pale colour.
Reduce, Re-use , Recycle
As a certified B Corp, we're always on the lookout for ways to reduce our waste to landfill. Part of this initiative means finding a new home for every coffee sack that lands in the roastery. Last year every coffee sack we received was repurposed by one of our customers so keep up the good work! Find out more about B Corp here..
